Quique Escamilla is a Mayan-Zapotec singer-songwriter born and raised in the tropical and conflict-ridden land of Chiapas, Mexico. Today, he is a Pan-American and an international touring artist based in Toronto, Canada.
Quique breaks down language barriers through his powerful voice, passionate delivery and untold heartfelt stories. He fuses traditional Mexican and Latin-American rhythms, such as ranchera, huapango and cumbia, with modern folk, rock and reggae elements.
His latest self-produced album, Encomienda, represents his mestizaje of rhythms of the Americas. Quique designed it with the intention and aim to decimate old and modern impacts of colonization, discrimination and racism against Indigenous Peoples and Black communities across the Americas. The different genres featured in his album truly represent and elevate the diversity of culture, colour and language that he wishes to see in the world.
Quique Escamilla is the first Mexican citizen to win a JUNO Award (Canada's most prestigious music recognition) and a Canadian Folk Music Award with his debut album, 500 Years of Night.
